Shelter Dog Birthday Party

I am crazy about dogs. Actually, I wasn’t until I got my dog, Mollie. I have never been more frustrated yet filled with such love (sometimes at the very same time) than I have in the past 5 years of owning Mollie. If you have dogs or kids, you know what I mean. August 1 has become affectionately known to dog lovers as Dogust 1 or the National Shelter Dog Birthday. To honor this holiday, I recently teamed up with an amazingly talented group of people to give a group of dogs one heck of a party! A Shelter Dog Birthday Party to be exact!

As a kid, I had a black lab named Applejacks, and then as an adult, I got another lab named Mollie. To add to the bunch, my husband has his German Shepard, Kaine. I have only had 3 dogs in my life, but they are teaching me something new every day. Whether a dog comes from a responsible breeder, a puppy mill or a shelter, once they are here, they need a home. Cats too!

Come. Sit. Stay to a Shelter Dog Birthday Party!

She is a black lab mix who likes to sleep 14 hours a day and drink water out of a cup like her momma. Fun fact, she hates having her photo taken.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty, only 1 out of 10 dogs born will find a permanent home and approximately 2 million cats and dogs are killed annually due to shelter overpopulation.  Most of the dogs abandoned do not come with paperwork so we will never know their actual birthday or their history. Most often, their story is too painful to know as they go through life alone, neglected and often abused. The National Shelter Dog Birthday has officially become August 1 giving these animals something to celebrate. Eventually, with education and awareness, we can find them a forever home.

I could not have been more proud of all of the vendors who participated in this crazy idea of mine! I called them up and said, hey, I know you love dogs, so I want to throw a dog birthday party and I need your help. To my surprise, each vendor was over the moon excited and immediately jumped on board.

Looking to throw your own Doggie birthday party? First, make sure you have a fenced-in area where the dogs can play and lots of yummy treats for them to eat. Finally, you can pick up a pup cake at Banana Split and have it customized for your own fur baby!
