Ashley Nicole Events Inc had the distinct pleasure of helping Marta and Jeff tie the knot this past August. Inspirational wedding photography is great, but a real wedding is the true cat’s meow! Marta comes from a predominantly Polish family and Jeff is as American as apple pie. Despite their differences, they made sure that cultural traditions and symbolic meanings were paramount in their day. We had so much fun bringing everything together! Furthermore, I was able to broaden my understanding of this truly remarkable culture. I am so excited to share their special day with you!
Marta comes from a Polish background and wanted to incorporate a special blessing prior to the ceremony. This blessing was led by her mother and father. This ceremonial “Salt and Bread” blessing represents the prosperity and bitterness they will encounter during their marriage. During dinner, it is customary for all of the guests to sing a song (Stol lat) wishing them many years of happiness, good wishes, and health. It is customarily finished by taking a shot of vodka and breaking the glass. These are all things I can get behind! It was a beautiful way to incorporate her cultural traditions into the wedding and served as a warm welcome to Jeff’s extended family!
Jeff and Marta had a beautiful Labor Day wedding along the Chicago River at Rivers Resturant, a true hidden gem in the city. They were blessed with gorgeous weather surrounded by friends and family. They danced long into the night and ended the evening with a sparkler send-off. This wedding was even more special because a past ANE bride and groom were in attendance.
It was very special to see Megan and Andy and add another amazing couple, Marta and Jeff into the Ashley Nicole Events family! I am truly blessed to be able to say I do THIS for a living!
Finally, if you are trying to plan a wedding with different cultures, here are some tips. Discuss what traditions you would like to incorporate early on in the planning process. Couples of various religious backgrounds and/or nationalities all celebrate weddings in a different and beautiful way. I recently did a fusion Jewish/Catholic wedding, a Catholic/Orthodox wedding and a full-on Big Fat Greek Wedding. If all of this is stressing you out, make sure you invest in some self-care or look into working with a planner to save your mental sanity!
As a planner, it is important to make sure you ask the right follow up questions. More importantly, as a couple, discuss what is a priority. Sometimes what your grandma did at her wedding 50 years ago is not a huge deal to you now. However, it might be something you want to continue. Talk with your fiance, and your family and get on the same page! Hosting an inter-faith/culture wedding is not for the faint of heart!
